Cyde and Hebridean Ferry Operator, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), is inviting amateur photographers of all ages to take part in a competition to have their photographs featured in the company’s popular calendar which is sold around its network and on board its ships.
Other prizes include CalMac Travel Vouchers, Amazon Camera & Photo shop vouchers and a framed print of the winning image.
CalMac is woven into the life of the west coast of Scotland, serving 30 ports in Argyll and the Isles alone and 50 in total up and down the entire west coast, serving 25 islands.
Regardless of the winners, the entries for this competition have the capacity together to be an astonishingly comprehensive record – snapshot, even – of the character of this unique part of the world.
Judging will simultaneously be a torment and a treat.
Martin Dorchester, Managing Director of CalMac, says: ‘Our calendar is a wonderful showcase for the west coast of Scotland and is highly prized by those who buy or receive them.
‘Our ships and ports often provide a perfect vantage point from which to capture the stunning scenery [and the wildlife], and we know from social media sites and picture sharing websites that there are many amazing pictures taken at all times of the year, in all conditions, that would be perfect for our calendar.
‘We have therefore decided to launch this competition to encourage people to take more pictures of and around our ships, and submit the best to us.’
CalMac say: ‘For inspiration the 2013 calendar can be viewed online here.
We say don’t go that way – it can only produce variations on a theme.
Think newly about the relationship between the ferries and the places and people they serve; about where they can get you to and what they can let you see.
It’s all about discovery; about surprise; about connections – sometimes between people and between people and paces who are not natural bedfellows; about the unexpected; the unique; the unforgettable – and without these ferries and this single embedded service for the west coast, so much less would be possible.
So start from scratch and see where it takes you. Knock ‘em dead.
